2021: The Year of Reconnection and Return to Community

IYC successfully adapted to this evolving landscape, blending virtual operations with a cautious and joyful return to in-person service. This year, IYC focused on community healing, cultural advocacy, and celebrating a major milestone: our 10-year anniversary.

Voice and Representation: Standing Against Asian Hate
In a critical act of civic engagement, IYC members participated and lent their voices to the Stop Asian Hate gathering held in the Basking Ridge town square. Representing and supporting minority communities, our volunteers stood publicly for solidarity and inclusion, demonstrating IYC’s commitment to advocacy and making a powerful statement on behalf of marginalized groups within the community.

A Joyful Reunion: The June Graduation Picnic
Marking a highly anticipated emotional milestone, IYC hosted its annual Graduation Picnic Party in June. This event was significant as it represented the club's first physical gathering in two years. The picnic provided a cherished, safe space for volunteers, teachers, and families to reconnect, celebrate the graduates, and reinforce the bonds of the IYC community that had been sustained virtually throughout the lockdown.
Supporting Local Arts: Fundraising Concert Collaboration
YC collaborated with a local art center to support their critical fundraising concert. Leveraging our established musical talent and organizational skills, IYC volunteers provided essential assistance, ensuring the success of the event. This partnership allowed IYC to expand its support for the non-profit sector, helping to sustain the local arts community during its vulnerable post-lockdown transition.

Celebrating a Decade: The IYC 10-Year Anniversary Community Concert
In September, IYC hosted its largest event since the pandemic began: the spectacular 10-Year Anniversary Community Outdoor Concert and Park Fair. Held at a local park, this wonderful community celebration attracted hundreds of neighbors who gathered to reconnect, enjoy performances, and participate in family-friendly activities. After two years of isolation, the fair served as a powerful symbol of community healing and the enduring joy of gathering together.
Impact Circle Complete: Visit to the New Rutgers Autism Center
IYC volunteers had the opportunity to visit the newly completed Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services (RCAAS) community center. This visit was particularly meaningful as it represented the culmination of the advocacy and fundraising efforts IYC had initiated in 2019. Volunteers enjoyed a wonderful visit, interacting with the staff and residents, and witnessing firsthand the positive impact of their sustained support.

Chelsea at Bridgewater is one of seven senior living centers across North and South New Jersey with which IYC has established a long-term friendship, offering everything from onsite and virtual concerts to crafts, fundraising support, and companionship throughout these years. Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented physical visits for nine months, the bond remained strong.
In a recent episode of the IYC Podcast, Ms. Dorothy, the Senior Lifestyles Director of the Chelsea at Bridgewater, shared heartwarming stories about the mutual love and support that has defined our enduring partnership. We invite you to listen to her testimonial below.
